Qualifications and Requirements
- Parent or Guardian & Child: They must be South African citizens/residents and live in South Africa for a required time.
- Children’s Age: The child must be under 18.
- You must be the primary caregiver.
- Means Test: Caregivers must meet the income requirement, meaning their earnings must be below the approved threshold. (e.g., earning less than R67,200 per year for single applicants or R134,400 combined for married couples as of recent guidelines).
- You cannot apply for this grant if the child is in state care or if the child is looked after by someone who is paid.
Limits:
- Biological Children: There is no limit on the number of qualifying biological children.
- Non-Biological Children: For up to six non-biological children who are not legally adopted (guardian or relative).
Requirements for Non-Biological Caregivers
If you are not the legal parent, you must provide proof of your primary caregiver status. Such as
- Affidavit from a police official.
- Report from a social worker.
- An affidavit from the child’s biological parent.

You can’t apply online but to submit an application for a SASSA Child Support Grant in 2026, visit the SASSA office in person and bring your ID, birth certificates, and proof of income/residency.
