The SASSA, which offers Child Support and Social Relief of Distress grants, also provides old-age grant financial support to South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees who are aged 60+ and meet strict income and asset limits (means test). They should not be in state care, and also don’t receive other grants.
What is the SASSA Old Age Grant?
The SASSA old age grant, which is also considered a pension for people who are above 60 and are not receiving state care or other grants. Its sole purpose is to help the aged people to take care of their medicine, health care, and other needs, which are essential for their survival, as these people are not in a state to work and earn. They receive amounts of around R2,320 per month, and it can be more for people above 75 (R2,340). To receive this grant, you should submit an application at a local SASSA office with ID and proof of means.

The SASSA Old Age Grant Payment Date for the month of January 2026 is scheduled for Tuesday, January 6. The payments are made directly into the payment method you selected, such as your bank account, retail store, or approved pay points. Unlike other grants, SASSA releases the payment of older persons’ grants first in the month to help applicants manage finances early.

How to Check Your Older Person Payment Date and Status
The status of your application or pay-days for the balance check can be inquired about in different ways
Payment Dates or Status Check Online
- Visit srd.sassa.gov.za.
- Log in to your ID
- Click on “Check Your Status.”
- Navigate to the old age grant status.
- If your status is approved, the payment dates will appear there.
Pay Days Check via WhatsApp
- Save the SASSA mobile number (082 046 8553) in your phone.
- Open Whatsapp and send SMS Old age Grant Status Check
- They will ask for your reference number, ID, or phone number.
- Provide it, and they will send you the status or paydays.
Qualifications and Requirements for the SASSA Old Age Grant
Unlike other SASSA grants, the requirements are different for the SASSA old age grant, which are listed below.
- The beneficiaries must be 60 years old.
- Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
- Must live in South Africa.
- The income or assets should be below the SASSA-set thresholds.
- Do not take benefits from other SASSA grants for yourself.
- Not maintained in a government or state institution (old age home).
How much are the grant amounts?
The amount depends on the age of a person, such as
- People who are under 75 receive cash of R2,320 per month.
- Those who are 75 and older get a cash payment of R2,340 per month.
How to apply for the SASSA Old Age Grant Support?
You can apply for the SASSA old-age pension grant online as well as by visiting the SASSA office or regional counter in person with the required documents.
Apply in person at the office.
- Visit the nearest SASSA office in your locality.
- Bring your South African 13-digit ID, proof of marital status (if applicable), and potentially a medical report if you need full-time care.
- Go to the customer support desk.
- A representative will help you apply and complete the means test.
Apply Online for the Old Age pension
To apply online, follow the below steps.
- Visit the website: https://services.sassa.gov.za/.
- Create an account or log in if you already have one.
- Navigate to the “Apply for a grant” and choose the Older Persons Grant.
- Fill out the application.
- Print the generated affidavit, get it certified by a Commissioner of Oaths, and also sign the bank details payment form.
- Upload documents (ID, bank statements, etc.) in PDF format.
- Submit the application.
- When you submit the application, SASSA will assign you a reference number to track the application status online.
Important Note
- If you are old enough or sick and can’t submit the application yourself, in this case, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf, with a doctor’s letter.
